ACRYLIC ACID

CAS number:79-10-7

  • Molecular Formula:

    C3H4O2

  • Molecular Weight:

    72.06g/mol

  • Brief Introduction:

Acrylic acid is an α,β-unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, with the molecular structure derived from ethene substituted by a carboxyl group. It is primarily used in the manufacture of plastics, paints, and other industrial products. While acrylic acid is a strong irritant to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes, there is limited information regarding its reproductive, developmental, or carcinogenic effects on humans, with animal studies yielding mixed results. Acrylic acid is conventionally produced from propylene, a non-renewable resource, but recent interest has shifted towards bio-based processes using glycerol, a by-product of biodiesel production. This process, known as glycerol oxydehydration, relies on bi/multifunctional catalysts, including zeolites, metal oxides, and heteropoly acids, to convert glycerol into acrylic acid. Although the process has shown promising yields of up to 60%, challenges such as catalyst deactivation remain. Additionally, the development of oxidation catalysts for the conversion of acrolein to acrylic acid has evolved significantly over nearly 70 years, with ongoing studies exploring more efficient methods, including glycerol dehydration for acrolein formation.

Carboxylic Acids

Acrylic acid is a member of the carboxylic acid family due to its -COOH (carboxyl) functional group.

Alpha, Beta-Unsaturated Carboxylic Acids

It has a conjugated system with a double bond (C=C) and a carboxyl group (-COOH), making it an alpha, beta-unsaturated carboxylic acid.

Monomers

Acrylic acid is a key monomer used in the synthesis of superabsorbent polymers, as well as other types of polymers such as polyacrylic acid and its derivatives.

Functional Monomers

It is used in polymer chemistry to introduce functional groups into polymers, such as in acrylic-based paints, adhesives, and coatings.
