  • Brief Introduction:

Sodium hyaluronate (SH) is a high molecular weight linear polysaccharide composed of sodium glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine. It has excellent physicochemical and biological properties and is widely used in medicine and cosmetics. It is mainly found in the vitreous body, skin, synovial fluid and bone tissue, and is known for its moisturizing ability. SH of different molecular weights has significant differences in different applications: high molecular weight SH (>1000 kDa) helps maintain the cohesion and structure of epithelial cells, lubricate joints and repair skin after injury; low molecular weight SH (<100 kDa) can stimulate the secretion of growth factors, chemokines and proinflammatory cytokines, and promote tumor progression. Studies have shown that SH has potential application value in the treatment of constipation-type irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C), dry eyes, rotator cuff injuries and cryopreservation of red blood cells. In addition, SH has been used to evaluate the thickening, lubrication and wetting properties in the development of artificial saliva products. Specifically, SH can relieve IBS-C symptoms by improving intestinal barrier function and regulating intestinal flora; in the treatment of dry eye, oral mouthwash containing SH can increase the flow rate of unstimulated saliva; for rotator cuff injury, ultrasound-guided platelet-rich plasma combined with SH can significantly improve the patient's functional recovery rate and reduce pain scores; in red blood cell cryopreservation, medium molecular weight SH combined with extremely low concentration of glycerol (5% v/v) can make the recovery rate of red blood cells after thawing reach more than 90%. In summary, SH, as a multifunctional biomaterial, shows broad application prospects in various medical scenarios.

Polysaccharides

It is a type of glycosaminoglycan (GAG), a long chain of sugar molecules. Polysaccharides are large molecules made up of repeated sugar units.

Biopolymers

Being a naturally derived polymer, it is categorized as a biopolymer.

Humectants

Due to its ability to retain moisture, sodium hyaluronate is commonly used in cosmetics and skincare products as a humectant.

Pharmaceutical Excipients

In pharmaceuticals, it is often used as a stabilizer or a component in injectable solutions, particularly in joint treatments and ophthalmology.

Cosmetic Ingredients

It is widely used in skincare and cosmetic products for its moisturizing properties and its ability to promote skin health.

Medical Devices/Injectables

In its injectable form, sodium hyaluronate is used in products like viscosupplements for joint disorders (such as osteoarthritis) and in ophthalmic surgeries.
